Traditional Maori Kai

The Maori word for "food" is "kai", In their traditional life Maori( New Zealand's indigenous people ) were hunters, gathers and crop farmers who world harvest their food from the forest, stream, sea, and garden.

Traditional Maori Diet 

The Maori diet was mainly based on birds and fish, eaten alongside wild herbs and root vegetables.  In their tribal gardens, Maori also grew root crops including potato and kumara ( sweet potato ).

Maori Food Gathering

Maori food gathering is till a tradition that is followed in Stewart Island. It is a custom for when Maori continue to catch eels, shellfish and kina to then preserve for later use.
