2011 9.1 Japan Earthquake

On March 11, 2011, a magnitude 9.1 earthquake shook northeastern Japan, unleashing a massive tsunami. This earthquake has been recorded the highest magnitude earthquake in Japan’s history. In this report, I will cover many various aspects of this disaster including: the damage and destruction it has caused, the tsunami that was caused by the earthquake, wider effects that were felt around the whole world, the significance of the high magnitude, and how scientists believe that the day’s have shortened because of the earthquake.


Exactly at 2:46pm, an 8.9 magnitude earthquake took place 962 cubic kilometers northeast of Tokyo. The original magnitude of the earthquake was thought to be 8.9 but this was later upgraded to a 9.0, then eventually scientists settled on a 9.1 magnitude reading on the seismic scale used to measure the intensity of earthquakes. The effects of the earthquake were felt around the whole globe, ranging from Norway all the way to Antartica. The massive 9.0 magnitude, shook large sections of Japan and is still setting off aftershocks in the area to this date. But the shaking wasn't only limited to the immediate region, some scientists believe, that microquakes were set off all around the globe because of this. Places that this seems to have happened are: Taiwan, Alaska and central California.


In Japan, residents are still recovering from the disaster. As of February 2017, there were still about 150,000 evacuees who lost their homes; 50,000 of them were still living in temporary housing. More than 120,000 buildings were destroyed, 278,000 were half-destroyed and 726,000 were partially destroyed, The damage from the disaster is estimated to be about $199 billion dollars (in USD). The combined total of confirmed deaths and missing is more than 22,000 people (nearly 20,000 deaths and 2,500 missing). Deaths were caused by the initial earthquake and tsunami . Many deaths were also caused by post-disaster health conditions. Geophysicist, Richard Gross, from the NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California believes that he has found a new analysis of the 9.1 earthquake in Japan which has found that the intense shaking has in fact accelerated the Earth's spin, shortening the length of the 24-hour day by 1.8 microseconds. If this information proves to be actually true, this change has the potential to have extreme effects on the earth in the long term.


The earthquake triggered a massive tsunami that flooded more than 200 square miles of coastal land. Waves were estimated to be as high as 38 meters, which is the average height of a 12-story building. Tsunami waves smashed the coast, causing massive damage and flooding, forcing 500,000 people to evacuate their homes. The 30 foot waves that were caused by the tsunami damaged several nuclear reactors in the area. Including lots of other countries, Japan's nuclear plants are designed to withstand earthquakes, and in the event of major earth movement, to shut down safely. In March 2011, eleven operating nuclear power plants shut down automatically but three of these caused an accident due to the 15 m waves lead the town to experience a loss of electricity and water. Remnants from the tsunami have continued to wash up on North American beaches years later.





Therefore, we can see that the earthquake was devastating in the sheer magnitude and force which it unleashed on the country. By looking at the effects which it caused, which I have discussed above, we can further understand the impact that it had on Japan and also the wider world. This earthquake is one of the biggest earthquakes in history and the fact that it occured in our lifetime means that we are getting to see the short term and long term effects which earthquakes pose to us first hand. Throughout this report, I have tried to gain a better understanding of the earthquake and the impacts surrounding it in terms of magnitude, destruction, damage, and more effects.
